How to Build a Proper Crawlspace (And Why It Matters!)
Have you ever seen those small openings in the ceiling that lead to the roof space? That’s called a crawlspace or manhole. It’s like a secret hideout inside your house! But here’s the problem – many houses in Nigeria have crawlspaces that are too small, dangerous, or poorly built.
Imagine trying to hide from kidnappers or fix a leaking roof, but the space is so tiny that you can’t even fit inside! Or worse, there are loose wires everywhere that can electrocute you. That’s why building a good crawlspace is VERY important.
In this post, I’ll explain:
- What a crawlspace is
- Why the size matters
- How to build it the right way
- Common mistakes to avoid
Let’s go!
What is a Crawlspace?
A crawlspace is the empty area between your ceiling and roof. It’s where electric wires, pipes, and sometimes even rats live (🙄). You enter through a small opening called a manhole.
Why Do You Need a Good Crawlspace?
- For safety – If you need to hide (e.g., from robbers), you should be able to fit inside.
- For repairs – Electricians and plumbers need to enter easily to fix problems.
- To avoid fire hazards – Loose wires can cause fires if not properly arranged.
How Big Should a Crawlspace Be?
Many houses have tiny manholes (less than 450mm x 450mm). That’s too small!
✅ The correct size should be:
- At least 600mm x 600mm (bigger is better!)
- For commercial buildings, up to 800mm x 800mm
- The space inside should be free (no blocking beams or wires)
Why?
- A bigger manhole means workers (or you) can enter easily.
- A free space inside means no crawling like a lizard just to move around.

Common Crawlspace Mistakes (Avoid These!)
- Too small manhole – If you can’t fit, it’s useless.
- Obstructed space – Wires, pipes, and wood blocking the way make it dangerous.
- Weak ceiling material – Some builders use POP (Plaster of Paris), which is not fire-resistant. Use gypsum board instead!

How to Build the Perfect Crawlspace
- Make the manhole BIG – At least 600mm x 600mm.
- Keep the inside space open – No unnecessary blocks.
- Use fire-resistant materials – Gypsum board is safer than POP.
- Organize wires properly – No loose or hanging wires.
- Check it after construction – Many builders do a bad job if no one inspects.

Final Advice
If your current crawlspace is too small or dangerous, it’s time to fix it! A good crawlspace can save your life (literally).
- Check your roof today.
- If your workers can’t enter easily, neither can you.
- If your contractor did a bad job, get a better one!
